What is the sample size?

The sample size is the relevant number of participants you need so that the results of your survey represent the opinion of the entire population (population size).

Example:
Let’s assume your company has 500 employees and you want to conduct a representative survey.

You can now use the sample calculator to calculate how many employees need to respond so that the results reflect the opinions of the entire workforce.

How do I calculate the sample size?

In order to calculate an exact number of participants (sample size), four values are required:

First of all, it is important to know what totality the results should represent. This is the total population. Simply enter the number of people for whom the results should represent.

Next, you need the margin of error. The margin of error indicates how far the results (errors) deviate from the total. An acceptable margin of error is between 3 % and 8 %. You can easily calculate the margin of error with our margin of error calculator and then enter it here.

The third value you need is the confidence level. This indicates how likely it is that the answers of the sample will match those of the whole. The industry standard is 95 %.

And finally, in order to calculate an exact sample size, you need the standard deviation. The standard deviation indicates how far the results of your sample deviate from the average. The standard value is 0.5.

These four values are then used to determine the required sample size so that your results reflect the representative opinion of the entire population.
