Almost everything you need to know about student satisfaction

Satisfaction is a state of mind that is achieved by accepting the current situation. It means being at peace with oneself and one’s life and accepting the circumstances. There is often a correspondence between an expectation I have of my life and the actual experience, that is, the achievement of that goal.

Often it is the little things in life that make us feel satisfied, such as a moment of time out. Sitting in the sun and enjoying a cup of coffee in peace can be such a moment of satisfaction.

But a compliment on a particularly good performance or a good grade in a term paper that was finally handed in after months of intensive work can also bring us close to this feeling.

Satisfaction is not a permanent state. Alternating phases of satisfaction and dissatisfaction are part of life. It is also possible to be satisfied in some areas of one’s life and not in others.

Contentment leads to inner balance and relaxation and can thus minimize stress. It is the drive to approach our lives and thus one of the goals to be achieved in life. Satisfied people are also more motivated and successful.

The permanent lack of satisfaction with one’s life can lead to physical and mental illness. Therefore, it is important to shape the conditions of life that can be influenced in such a way that they suit you and fulfill you.

Asking students about their satisfaction gives you the opportunity to check whether the quality of the courses, but also the equipment with technology or tables and chairs or the break and recreation facilities at your school or university are suitable.

Based on the feedback, you can get new ideas and suggestions for the design and implementation of courses or promote the breaks and recreation periods between classes, for example, by (re)designing the common rooms or even sports activities.

You can also ask your students about their wishes and needs and listen to them. After all, a satisfied student enjoys going to school, and this has an impact not only on his or her grades, but also on his or her social behavior. A good atmosphere, a genuine school community and successful students get the word out. The image of your school/university will also benefit from this.

And just imagine, without feedback from your students/students, you would never know what is already going well or where there is still potential for improvement. This deprives you of the opportunity for continuous improvement and learning that you also demand from your students.

And it is also positive for your pupils/students to involve them and thus give them the opportunity to help develop and thus influence your everyday school/study life.

There is no right or wrong here. Any questions that will help you shed light on your students’ satisfaction can be asked.

We have summarized a few ideas for you below:

  • How satisfied are you with lesson planning?
  • Is information about lesson cancellations provided in a timely manner?
  • Are arrangements made for lesson substitutions?
  • How satisfied are you with exam preparation?
  • What is going particularly well? What is not going so well?
  • What do you miss about our school/university?
  • How comfortable do you feel in your class community?
  • How do you rate the workload?

You can find more inspiration for possible questions in our ready-made survey template.
